The Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, has called for the Bank of Ghana to be protected from political meddling, stressing the need to preserve the central bank’s autonomy and credibility.

He placed the call during a courtesy visit to the Governor of the Bank of Ghana, Johnson Asiama, on Wednesday, January 7, 2026.

Describing the Bank of Ghana as an essential national entity that impacts every citizen, the Asantehene called on political figures to practice caution in their interactions with the central bank.

“This is a unique institution with a mandate that ultimately affects every citizen of the land. Ideally, this citadel should be a fortress insulated from the strings and arrows of the political warfare. Whatever it is, we should think twice before we do anything that has the capacity to cast a snare on the integrity of the bank,” Otumfuo stated.

He urged both ends of the political spectrum to provide the Governor and his staff with the space, respect, and backing necessary to perform their professional responsibilities without unnecessary pressure.

“I will appeal to the nation and both sides of the political divide to give the Governor, my son and his team a chance, give them the space and respect to perform their professional duties. Support them along the right path. This is our bank; if they fail, we risk collapse, if they succeed, we walk in wealth and in glory,” the Asantehene added.

Otumfuo Osei Tutu II showed trust in the management of the Bank of Ghana, stating he is convinced the organization has the ability to fulfill its responsibilities for national economic stability and growth.

Governor Dr. Asiama praised the Asantehene’s leadership, citing his wisdom and stability in national matters.

Dr. Asiama outlined the Bank’s vision: “Ghana’s recovery must now move beyond better statistics to better livelihoods. It must translate into jobs for the youth, stronger local industry, affordable credit that does not reignite inflation, and a financial system that supports enterprise and long-term investment. The Bank of Ghana is fully committed to playing its role, firmly, independently, and professionally, so that the gains we are beginning to see become durable and inclusive”.
