The New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) presidential candidate and vice president of the republic of Ghana, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has promised to lower the cost of data and remove import taxes on cell phones in order to increase youth access to digital tools.
Dr. Bawumia stressed the NPP’s dedication to reducing the financial burden on young people, who mostly depend on mobile technology for communication, education, and entrepreneurship, while speaking at a mini rally in the Ashanti Region on Monday, November 18, in Nhyiaeso.
“I know the youth love mobile phones, and I want to assure you that we will eliminate the import duty on mobile phones to make them cheaper. Additionally, we will bring down the cost of data so you can connect, communicate, and make calls affordably,” he stated to a rousing reception from the crowd.
The commitment coincides with mounting complaints over Ghana’s soaring mobile device and data costs, which have made it harder for many people to access digital services.
The impact of these high expenses on young people, who make up a significant percentage of the population and are largely dependent on mobile technology for daily tasks, has been brought to the attention of stakeholders and consumer advocacy groups on numerous occasions.
Additionally, Dr. Bawumia reaffirmed the NPP’s ultimate goal of empowering young people and developing a digital economy that spurs opportunity and progress.
He revealed a plan to train 5,000 youth, including school dropouts, in digital skills in the Nhyiaeso Constituency.
The program is a component of his larger plan to teach one million young Ghanaians digital skills including remote work and coding.
The vice president also presented a compelling argument for his election, arguing that his impeccable record qualifies him as the nation’s top contender.
“Mahama, who is making a resurgence, will only hold office for four years. He won’t be held responsible for his management, in my opinion. After eight years in office, I would come to you again to show off my work and get your advice on how to improve.
