Report reaching Ghanatodayonline.com indicates that President Akufo-Addo has conferred with Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the flagbearer of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP), on his selection of a running mate for the December 7 presidential election.

Reports indicates that a meeting was held at the Jubilee House yesterday night.

Vice President Dr. Bawumia gave the President his selection at the meeting.

Dr. Bawumia’s decision was ultimately approved despite President Akufo-Addo’s advise and ideas being given.

The selected candidate, according to him, is a 56-year-old physician who completed his studies at Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology.

Napo was first elected to Parliament in 2008 and won re-election in 2012, 2016 and 2020. He served on the Health Appointment and Defence and Interior Committees of Parliament.

In 2017, President Akufo-Addo appointed him Education Minister and he now serves as the Energy Minister. The name is Dr Matthew Opoku Prempeh also known as NAPO.

It’s unclear if the National Intelligence Bureau (NIB) survey had any bearing on the Vice President’s decision to select Dr. Opoku Prempeh as his running mate.

He did see, though, that the party’s grassroots seemed to favor the Energy Minister.

He continued by saying that Dr. Bawumia had previously announced Dr. Opoku Prempeh as his running mate, stressing that this was not shocking even after he won the NPP flagbearership contest.

To formally present his pick, the NPP flagbearer is anticipated to meet with the party council in the meantime. An official announcement will be made after acceptance.

The National Intelligence Bureau (NIB) poll from June 15, 2024 revealed that party members overwhelmingly wanted Energy Minister Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh to be Dr. Mahamadu Bawumia’s running partner in the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

5,116 NPP delegates from across the country participated in the survey, including national, regional, constituency, and polling place executives.

Dr. Opoku Prempeh received 76.2% of the answers from the CEOs surveyed, according to the report.

Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum, the Bosomtwe MP and Minister of Education, came in second with 10.16%.
