Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has promised to provide free tertiary education to any disabled person who is accepted into a Ghanaian university.
As part of his current national tour, Dr. Bawumia promised the clergy during a meeting in the Western North Region.
While scholarships are normally awarded to a variety of groups, Dr. Bawumia stressed that his government will give preference to those with impairments. He stated that beginning in 2025, the scholarship will cover both residential and academic costs.
“I am very clear on the way forward. I believe that for persons with disabilities, we are going to support them a bit more. We are giving scholarships to every person but I am going to dedicate some of the monies to our scholarship secretariat and the GET Fund to provide free tertiary education; both tuition and accommodation to every person with a disability who makes it into the university so they can all benefit,” Dr. Bawumia stated.
This program demonstrates Dr. Bawumia’s dedication to promoting inclusion and fair access to higher education for those with impairments. The NPP seeks to reduce financial burdens and enable people with disabilities to achieve their academic goals without limitations by providing free postsecondary education.
With regard to meeting the educational requirements of underprivileged groups, Dr. Bawumia’s pledge demonstrates a proactive approach and underscores the party’s commitment to advancing fairness and accessibility in Ghana’s educational system.
