Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the vice president and flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has promised to build a new teaching hospital for the people of Cape Coast and the surrounding areas.
Speaking on Monday during a meeting with the Central Regional House of Chiefs to wrap up his two-day tour of the Central Region, Dr. Bawumia announced that the medical facility, which will be modeled after the University of Ghana Medical Centre, will be located on the University of Cape Coast campus.
When finished, the building will serve as a quaternary medical and research center providing the Central Region and beyond with top-notch patient care, training, and research services.
According to him, the government’s goal is to improve every citizen’s health, regardless of their location, gender, or political affiliation, since health is a crucial economic sector.
“This aligns with the Government’s overarching goal of achieving universal health coverage and fostering a healthy populace,” Dr Bawumia said.
He emphasized that the nation could not continue to rely on other countries for healthcare support and underlined the necessity to revitalize domestic capability within the healthcare sector.
The NPP Flagbearer emphasized that the government has made significant investments in the health sector, demonstrating its recognition of health as a vital component of prosperity.
He noted that even after 60 years of independence, there were still over 90 districts in the nation without public hospitals.
The Agenda 111 project, a daring attempt by the government to build a hospital in every area, was an important element to recognize.
He disclosed that about eighty-seven hospitals were being built at different phases of completion at the moment.
