Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the vice president and flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has pledged to turn Ghana into a pharmaceutical powerhouse for West Africa.
In an effort to provide additional light on his plans for the sector and the country, Dr. Bawumia made these remarks during a campaign stop Thursday morning, April 4, 2024, in Accra, Ghana.
He claimed the conversation provided him with more understanding of the problems that Society members face, and he promised to incorporate those understandings into his policies.
“Transforming the industry and making Ghana a pharmaceutical hub in West Africa to start with, will be of enormous benefits to Ghana, and my government, by the grace of God, will focus on that,” Dr Bawumia said.
Dr. Bawumia emphasized that Ghana may become a pharmaceutical powerhouse in West Africa with strong political commitment and appropriate industry-supporting funding.
Dr. Bawumia stated that his administration will give priority to scholarships for students pursuing pharmacy studies as part of its goal to assist the education of pharmacists.
In order to support the sector, the NPP flagbearer also mentioned the necessity for a pharmaceutical park in Ghana.
Dr. Bawumia provided an update on the state of pharmacies in Ghana, focusing on e-pharmacy, the countrywide online pharmacy platform that he led from inception to completion. About 2500 pharmacies have reportedly joined the platform thus far, and he promised that his administration will continue to advance the digitalization of the pharmaceutical sector.
