In outlining his goals for the fishing sector, the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) 2024 Flagbearer Mahamudu Bawumia pledged to assist the effective execution of a comprehensive fisheries plan that encourages and optimizes the fisheries resources from the sea, inland fisheries, and aquaculture.
Speaking to fishermen in the Western Region as part of his campaign’s first phase, Bawumia said the plan will assist the industrial, semi-industrial, and artisanal subsectors.
Along with this, it will address other important issues such improper pre-mix fuel distribution, inadequate cold storage facilities, overfishing and fish stock depletion, illegal unreported fishing, and financial services and credit availability.
He stated that inefficient supply chains for the distribution of premix fuel, a lack of proper cold storage facilities, overfishing, and fish stock depletion are the primary issues facing the fishing business. The other ones include inadequate access to finance and financial services, illegal and unreported fishing, and a lack of economic diversification for fishermen.
He asserts that the NPP government has been dedicated to overcoming these obstacles for the past seven years, and that the industry will advance even more under his new strategy.
Using the occasion, he highlighted the achievements of the NPP government in the fishing sector, such as the establishment of fish landing sites along the coast in areas like Axim in the Nzema East Municipality, Discove in the Ahanta West Municipality, Mumford in the Gomoa West District, Moree-Abura Asebu Kwamankese District, Winneba-Effutu Municipality, Ekumfi-Otuam-Ekumfi District, Mfantseman-Mfantseman Municipality, Senya Breku- Awutu Senya West District, Central, and Elmina-Komenda Edina Eguafo Abirem District, Central.
He called on the fishermen to support him in his ascent to the president so that he could carry on serving their interests, pointing out that three landing beaches in the Greater Accra area are currently in varying states of completion.
The three landing sites in Greater Accra are located in Osu, the Korle Klottey Municipality, at 99% completion, Teshie in Ledzokuku Municipal, Greater Accra, at 80% completion, and Jamestown in the Ga Mashie District, at 65% completion.
Additional accomplishments of the administration include the Ningo Prampram District, Greater Accra (50%) and Komenda-Komenda Edina Eguafo Abirem, Central (95%) as well as Sea Defence (Coastal Protection Project) in Anomabu, Mfantseman Municipal, Central (75%).
According to Dr. Bawumia, the government has also used premix fuel automation and monitoring system machines to digitize the distribution of premix across the nation. He stated that the Greater Accra area’s Nungua, Abia, Kokrobite, Old Ningo, Elavanyo, Wokumagbe, and Otrokpey had all successfully finished Premix Fuel Automation Projects.
The others are Yeji A, B, and C in the Bono East Region and Dadoto, Dambai, and Kete Krachi Main in the Oti region. The Volta Region, Central Region, and Western Region all have different automation projects in varying states of completion.
