Former Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia has secured the presidential candidacy of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) after a decisive victory in the party’s nationwide presidential primaries on Saturday.
In a decisive show of superiority, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia was proclaimed the clear victor of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) presidential primary, securing the party’s candidacy for the 2028 elections with a commanding win in 14 of the nation’s 16 regions.
The Electoral Commission (EC) published the final verified results late Saturday evening after the primary, indicating that Dr Bawumia obtained 110,643 votes, which represents 56.48 percent of the overall valid votes cast by more than 196,000 delegates at 333 polling locations across the country.
The performance resulted in a complete victory in several areas, as the former Vice-President surpassed his opponents.
A total of 196,462 votes were submitted, and 561 ballots were rejected.
According to the regional analyses, Dr. Bawumia emerged victorious in important bastions like Ashanti (where he received close to 20,000 votes), Greater Accra (about 19,800 votes), Eastern, Western, Western North, and Bono East (with roughly 69 percent in that region alone), Ahafo (achieving a complete victory across all constituencies), Northern and Upper East (more than 60 percent despite a slight loss in a single constituency), among others.
Just two regions — Volta, where Dr. Bryan Acheampong won, and Central, won by businessman and ex-MP Kennedy Ohene Agyapong evaded his dominance.
Kennedy Agyapong secured second place with 46,554 votes, accounting for 23.76 percent, while Dr Bryan Acheampong took third with 36,303 votes, which represents 18.53 percent
The MP for Bosomtwi and former Minister of Education, Dr Yaw Osei Adutwum, trailed with 1,999 votes, representing 1.02 per cent, with the remainder accounted for by Kwabena Agyei Agyepong and rejected ballots.
In his victory speech at the NPP headquarters, Dr Bawumia thanked delegates for their trust and called for immediate unity.
“This is not my victory alone; it is the victory of every committed NPP member who believes in our shared vision for Ghana,” he said.
“We swept across the nation because our message resonated: progress, innovation, and inclusive leadership. Now, we must heal, unite, and prepare to win in 2028. No one will be left behind,” he stated.
