After Ghana’s 2023 Africa Cup of Nations group stage elimination, coach Chris Hughton was fired.

After losing 2-1 to Cape Verde in their opening game, the Black Stars finished Group B with two points, drawing 2-2 with both Egypt and Mozambique.

Ghana was eliminated on Tuesday after results went against their distant hopes of qualifying as one of the four teams in third place.

Hughton was named head coach of Ghana in February of the previous year.

“Chris Hughton has been relieved of his duties with immediate effect,” a Ghana Football Association (GFA)

“The executive council has also taken a decision to dissolve the technical team of the Black Stars.

“The GFA will in the coming days provide a roadmap on the future direction of the Black Stars.”

In February 2022, former Brighton and Newcastle United manager Hughton started serving as the four-time continental champions’ technical adviser.

He took over as manager from Otto Addo, who resigned after the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, where Ghana finished bottom of Group H with just one victory in three games.

Ghana and the other West African teams were eliminated in the group stage of the 2021 Afcon finals in Cameroon and Ivory Coast, respectively.

Following their shocking loss to Cape Verde, a fan got into a “verbal altercation” with the coach, and the GFA declared that it was “100%” behind Hughton.

With Ghana occupying second place in Group B and leading Mozambique 2-0 in their last group match, it appeared as though the 65-year-old would lead the Black Stars to the round of 16.

But the Mambas scored twice in stoppage time in the second half to secure an unlikely draw that ultimately saw the Ghanaians sent home.

Under Hughton, the West Africans had also had a mixed start to their 2026 World Cup qualifying campaign, defeating Madagascar 1-0 in stoppage time and then losing to Comoros 1-0.
