Following a resolution made by the association’s National Council in a virtual meeting on Friday, January 24, 2025, the Colleges of Education Teachers Association of Ghana (CETAG) announced the immediate suspension of its three-week industrial action.

A number of considerations led to the decision to call off the strike, including the employer’s goodwill in transferring employees to the University Salary Structure in accordance with the National Labour Commission’s (NLC) Arbitration Awards.

The choice was also influenced by the arrival of a new Minister of Education, who has pledged to work with CETAG to quickly address unresolved issues.

The group also recognized that college students and the academic community at large were suffering as a result of the strike.

The Fair Wages and Salaries Commission (FWSC), Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC), and the Controller and Accountant General Department (CAGD) still need to address a number of outstanding issues from the arbitration awards and migration process, CETAG stressed despite the suspension.

These are the issues raised by CETAG:

  1. Payment of All Year Round Work Compensation (AYRWC) for additional work done in 2022 across 42 Colleges.
  2. Payment of arrears for the 2023/2024 Book and Research Allowance, dependent on the implementation of the arbitral award granted by the NLC on May 2, 2023.
  3. Payment of 2022/2023 Book and Research Allowance Top-Up arrears for deserving staff at Akrokerri College of Education.
  4. Non-migration and improper placement of certain association members.

The leadership of CETAG urged members to return to work right away and thanked them for their support and dedication throughout the strike.

They gave them the reassurance that these problems will be addressed and that all worries will be addressed.

The National Conference of Principals of Colleges of Education (PRINCOF), FWSC, GTEC, CAGD, and the media were also recognized by the organization for their assistance in the latter phases of the migration process.
