When a gang of unidentified thugs broke into the polling center and interfered with the sorting and counting of ballots, the Ashanti Region’s Council of State elections plunged into pandemonium.
According to witnesses, the attackers broke into the venue with force, knocked over tables, destroyed ballot boxes, and strewn voting materials, forcing EC officials to halt the proceedings.
The surprise loss of Yaw Owusu Obimpeh, a candidate for the National Democratic Congress (NDC) who was regarded as a frontrunner, is thought to have been the catalyst for the disturbance.
The incident was allegedly started by supporters who were upset with the decision and demanded that the results be investigated.
As tensions increased, on-site security forces found it difficult to maintain order, and the election was temporarily halted.
Since then, more law enforcement personnel have been sent in to maintain order and protect election materials.
As of right now, the Electoral Commission has not issued a formal statement addressing the disruption or detailing what will happen after the election.
