President Mahama has come under fire from renowned investigative journalist Manasseh Awuni Azure for allegedly protecting corrupt former government officials.
He claims that Mahama’s widespread dismissal of court proceedings demonstrates his preference for defending political associates over upholding the rule of law.
“I nicknamed Akufo-Addo the Chief Clearing Agent, and Mahama seems to relish that title,” Azure remarked.
He cautioned that Mahama’s present behavior is perpetuating the same pattern, undermining accountability, in a Facebook post on Monday, February 10.
Azure cited previous cases in which political leaders cleared officials who subsequently admitted to misconduct.
“Let us not forget that the persons Akufo-Addo cleared and publicly defended were not all clean. Pius Hadzide, for instance, who was cleared of his involvement in the Australia visa scandal, publicly confessed his role when he was campaigning to be the MP for Asuogyaman in the just-ended election,” he stated.
He issued a warning that Ghana’s government may suffer long-term consequences from such political meddling in the legal system.
“Operation Recover All Loot (ORAL) cannot succeed when its implementers are engaged in Operation Clear All Looters (OCAL),” Azure said.
He asked Mahama to change his strategy, saying that a government that is sincere about combating corruption shouldn’t be clearing people of financial mismanagement charges.
