One of the Chinese nationals detained at Nsawam Medium Prison has managed to break free.
It is said that the prisoner, who had been found guilty of theft and other offenses, made up his illness in order to be transferred to Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital for medical attention.
According to reports, the Chinese prisoner was first detained in Tema before being transferred to the extremely secure Nsawam Prison. However, he made his daring escape on Wednesday, February 7, 2024, while he was a patient at the hospital. It is still unclear how he managed to get off the hospital property undetected.
The Ghana Prison Service, which sees the breakout as a serious security breach, is determined to bring the suspect back into custody.
Superintendent Abdul Latif Adamu, the public relations officer for the Ghana Prisons Service, has assured the public that their team is actively searching for and apprehending the escaped person.
“We’re getting a lot of leads that show that what we’re doing works,” Mr. Adamu said.
He did stress, though, that the investigation is still ongoing and that the authorities are making every effort to address this security breach.
