In the Effutu Municipality, Central Region, a cholera outbreak has claimed the lives of two kids; their mortal remains are being held at the morgue for postmortem analysis.
29 instances have been confirmed out of 356 suspected cases. Ten of the fifteen patients admitted to the Winneba Municipal Hospital are in critical condition.
The data above were provided by Dr. Douglas Amponsah, the Acting Medical Superintendent of the Winneba Municipal Hospital. He noted that the most of the cases were being reported in coastal fishing towns, with pregnant women and children making up the majority of the victims.
Other medical professionals anticipate that about 100 individuals who displayed cholera symptoms will soon be released from the hospital.
The outbreak was deemed “alarming” by James Kofi Annan, the National Democratic Congress’ (NDC) 2024 parliamentary candidate for Effutu. He said the districts that had high sanitation seemed to be immune to the outbreak.
“A lot of them have running water in their homes, toilets, the sanitation situation is better. But where the cases are coming from like Sankor, Juma, Ponkoekyir, Alatapokodo, you see that sanitation is an issue. Sanitation is a complex situation there,” he noted.
In an attempt to contain the outbreak, he pledged to move the garbage dump in Sankor where kids “scavange” and started a cleanup effort “this week.”
His radio station will be “at the disposal of the municipal health directorate” to help raise awareness, he said.
He lamented that, considering the severity of the outbreak, his offer of “tissues, hand sanitizers, liquid soap, nose masks” and other items might not be sufficient.
He mentioned other initiatives, stating that he had visited the Ghana Health Service’s headquarters because he “wanted to meet the director-general.”
“Unfortunately, he had to go to parliament with the minister [of health] so we couldn’t meet.”
