The Kwame Danso District Court in the Bono East Region has been temporarily and immediately closed by Chief Justice Paul Baffoe-Bonnie after a violent crowd action on Wednesday, December 10, 2025, halted sessions and released those in custody.
Citing grave security concerns, the Chief Justice ordered the court to be closed until further notice in a decree issued on Friday, December 12. The injunction was urgent and required to protect judicial officers, personnel, and plaintiffs, according to the notice.
“Following the occurrences at the Kwame Danso District Court, I have been directed by His Lordship the Chief Justice to request you to close the Court temporarily from today, 12 December 2025, until further notice,” a correspondence from the Judicial Service said.
The Republic v. Isaac Kwabena Mintah & Two Others, a case involving allegations of unlawful damage, theft, and assault under the Criminal and Other Offenses Act, 1960 (Act 29), was being heard by the court when the chaotic episode happened on Wednesday at around eight in the morning.
The Judicial Service Staff Association of Ghana (JUSAG) claims that the announcement that the accused had been placed under remand set off the attack. According to reports, a sizable crowd originally assembled at the Kwame Danso Police Station before protesting by marching to the courtroom.
According to reports, the gang forcefully disrupted court proceedings, dispersed court employees, attorneys, and litigants, and stormed the courtroom with dangerous objects. The accused were subsequently forcibly released by the mob, which then seized control of the area.
According to JUSAG, employees were forced to escape for their own safety and locked themselves inside offices while the mob destroyed office supplies and furniture. An urgent request for outside assistance was made when the attackers also made an effort to enter the magistrate’s chambers.
