Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, the Asantehene, has received a petition from the People’s National Party (PNP), the breakaway party from the PNC, asking him to step in and stop what the party claims is a politically motivated attempt by President John Dramani Mahama and the National Democratic Congress (NDC) to remove Chief Justice Gertrude Araba Torkornoo, who is currently suspended.
PNP leader Janet Nabila denounced the circumstances behind the Chief Justice’s suspension in a statement to the media on Tuesday, July 1, following the presentation of the petition.
She referred to the suspension procedure as “a political witch hunt” and charged that the Mahama administration was attempting to exercise excessive influence over all three branches of government.
Concerned about what she perceives to be a pattern of victimization against women, Janet Nabila warned that Justice Torkornoo’s trauma jeopardizes Ghana’s democratic and judicial integrity.
“We came to Manhyia to petition the Asantehene because we believe our traditional authorities must intervene when state institutions fail. As women, we are deeply disturbed that a female Chief Justice is being targeted in this way. I wept listening to her speak about her suffering,” she said.
She also criticized the government’s timing, citing Thanksgiving and the National Day of Prayer.
“You cannot genuinely pray and give thanks while acting with such vindictiveness. What we need is a National Day of Repentance,” she stated.
Nabila refuted any double standards in response to accusations of bias for remaining silent during the ouster of former Electoral Commission Chairperson Charlotte Osei, stating that the PNP’s stance is founded on principles rather than politics.
Otumfuo Osei Tutu II is being urged by the party to use his moral power and clout to guarantee justice and equity in the current procedure.
