Colleges of Education at risk of shutdown over CETAG strike

The Colleges of Education Teachers Association of Ghana (CETAG) has refused orders from the Fair Wages and Salary Commission (FWSC) to end its strike and return to work, resulting in a stop to academic activity throughout all education colleges.

The academic calendar’s future is unknown because of the total stoppage of administrative and academic operations brought about by this strike.

Due to the government’s protracted implementation of the National Labour Commission’s (NLC) Arbitral Award Orders and agreed service conditions, CETAG announced an indefinite strike on Friday, June 14, 2024.

In retaliation, the FWSC directed CETAG to immediately suspend its industrial action.

Given the government’s efforts to resolve their concerns, the commission characterized CETAG’s decision to strike at such a critical juncture as an act of ill faith.

But CETAG sent a notification stating that it would not abide by the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission’s (FWSC) order to cease the strike, and it threatened to file a lawsuit against the FWSC if it wanted to compel the government to do its obligations.

As the strike is negatively affecting their education, some students who talked with Ghanatodayonline.com begged teachers to get back to the classroom.
