Some businesspeople in the Ashanti region’s Kumasi city have criticized President Akufo-Addo, his vice Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, and the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) harshly, saying: “You will not break any eight if you do not develop the region.”
If the NPP government did not halt its “lackadaisical approach” to projects in the region and stopped neglecting its stronghold in terms of developmental initiatives, the irate traders vowed to vote out the party.
The Executive Member of the group, Nana Asare Michael Bediako, stated during a news conference on Tuesday, October 10, 2023, that the NPP has abandoned all projects in the region, despite certain projects in other regions, particularly in the Eastern region, still being in progress.
The Kumasi Kejetia Redevelopment Project, the Kumasi Airport Project, the Komfo Anokye Maternity Block Project, the Boankra Inland Port Project, and the Krofrom Market Project were a some of the projects he identified as having been stalled.
Mr. Bediako claims that the remaining projects are the Kumawu Hospital, Sewua Regional Hospital, and Afari Military Hospital.
He listed a number of additional road projects that had been put on hold, including the Suame Interchange project, the Kwabre District roads, the Manso District roads, the Bosome Freho District roads, and the Atwima Kwanwoma District roads.
Even if many projects have been abandoned, Mr. Bediako claimed that some are still in progress in the Eastern region, which he called regrettable and disgusting.
Mr. Bediako questioned whether the governing NPP understood the anguish, suffering, and annoyance of the people in the area after they cast a large number of votes for them to win power without reaping the rewards of their labor.
He urged the NPP administration, President Akufo-Addo, and his Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia to give the region’s development first priority.
Additionally, he exhorted the local MPs to work for the region’s advancement.
Therefore, the traders have vowed to vote out the current NPP government and render their “break the eight” mantra impossible to achieve if they do not prioritize the development of the region.
An executive member for the traders, Mr Sarfo Kantanka said it was disheartening for the NPP government to abandon the project at the time residents of Ashanti Region needed the facility the most.
“it’s very disheartening to note that, the second and third phase of the Kejetia project have been shelved for several months”
“Some top officials of NPP told us that, construction had halted due to Christmas holidays, and after 10 months now, not an inch has been added to the project since January 2023”.
“Here we are today, several months down the lane, the purported holiday hasn’t come to an end, and now that the reality caught with them, the message has change from holiday to Covid-19 and Russia-Ukraine War”.
“If indeed the country is experiencing financial problems and as a result infrastructural projects have been halted in the Ashanti Region, why are they still completing projects in other parts of the regions, particularly Greater Accra? “he questioned.
