Two factions have written conflicting letters to the Electoral Commission (EC) about the GFP’s participation in the general elections scheduled for December 7.

In one letter, GFP General Secretary George Afful formally informed the EC of the party’s decision to support Philip Kwabena Agyemang, also known as Roman Fada, as their presidential candidate, causing internal strife within the GFP.

“I hereby write to inform the Commission that the party has duly nominated Mr Philip Appiah Kubi to replace our late Presidential Candidate for the 2024 elections.

“His name Is hereby submitted to the Commission in line with your request in the letter under reference,” the statement read.

The statement added that the party will submit the nomination of the new presidential candidate within the legally required time frame.

This came when Akua Donkor, the party’s founder and former flagbearer, passed away too soon.

In accordance with Article 40(4) of the 1992 Constitution, the EC directed the GFP to propose a new presidential candidate within ten days, and this decision conforms with that directive.

But according to another letter from Richard Botchway, the party’s national organizer, the GFP had chosen to completely drop out of the presidential election after speaking with Akua Donkor’s family.

“We are by this letter formally informing the Commission of our intention not to participate in the elections.

“Any inconveniences this decision may have caused the Commission and its calendar for the December 7 elections is deeply regretted,” the statement read.

The party will be prepared to take part in any upcoming elections that the Electoral Commission organizes, the statement added.

There are now serious ramifications for the GFP’s possible presidential run due to the internal strife inside the organization.
