The National Democratic Congress (NDC) Constituency chairman’s office suffered damage by irate Ashaiman locals in protest of President John Mahama’s refusal to name their Member of Parliament, Ernest Norgbey, to a ministerial position, escalating tensions in the community.
In a large-scale protest earlier today, irate constituents intended to stop the Tema Motorway.
The protest was stopped, nevertheless, by the Constituency Chairman’s and the party leaders’ prompt action.
Disappointed with the result, protesters broke into the party chairman’s office, setting fire to tires inside, and breaking the gates.
The demonstrators contend that Ashaiman has been a pillar of the NDC for many years and contributed the second-highest number of votes to the party’s victory.
They feel that a ministerial appointment is a fitting way to honor their devotion.
The necessity for more representation at the national level was emphasized by some angry party members and locals who expressed their dissatisfaction.
As he maintains that Ashaiman deserves more, Godwin Tsimesi, the presiding member of the Ashaiman Municipal Assembly, has urged the President to address the complaints and appealed for calm.
