The Consultative Committee for Constitutional Review has suggested capping the number of MPs elected to the House.
The committee feels that in order to ensure that there are no more than 277 elected members of Parliament, Article 93 has to be amended accordingly.
It contended that the action would result in consequence changes to Article 47, ensuring that Ghana is divided into as many constituencies as the Electoral Commission (EC) may specify in order to hold MP elections, with a cap of 277 seats.
The plan was made public on Thursday during a stakeholder consultation in Parliament in Accra over a potential review of the 1992 constitution.
In the interim, the committee has suggested capping the size of government and doing away with the authority to choose Deputy Ministers.
The committee believes that Regional Ministers ought to be eliminated in the same manner as Deputy Ministers.
According to the committee’s report, the President would designate as many Ministers of State as the effective running of the government may demand. But there can be no more than 25 Ministers.
