Martin Adjei Mensah Korsah, the Minister for Local Government and Rural Development, has threatened to take legal action against contractors who, after being paid, neglect to complete important infrastructure projects in 35 municipalities.
The Minister has issued a warning that failure by contractors to fulfill their commitments would result in contract termination. He clarified that certain contractors have been paid, but they have not finished the necessary work, which is impeding the construction of vital infrastructure.
Following a visit of the Western and Central Regions, Martin Adjei Mensah Korsah addressed the media and reaffirmed his ministry’s commitment to addressing certain contractors’ slack performance. He said that the Ministry will not stand for it when certain contractors purposefully put off projects in order to obtain more funding from the government.
“Some have been good, some have not been good. Where it’s not been good, we have put in place measures to ensure that nobody frustrates the government and the people who must be enjoying these projects. We have observed that some contractors who have some agreement with the ministry to work, having been paid what they need under the agreement, have failed to deliver as required.”
The Minister underlined that such actions will no longer be accepted by the Ministry.
“They collect the money and the work is not being done. Where you expect a higher percentage of the work to have been done, there’s nothing there. And what we have been saying is that we can no longer continue to tolerate that.
“The ministry is building records of all those people and we intend to apply the law to make sure that they don’t even come near our procurement processes next time, let alone have any jobs with us. And again, within the same space, we’ve had the cause to terminate some arrangements because they failed to deliver.”
Mensah Korsah issued a warning, stating that contractors that perform poorly will be subject to legal repercussions, which may include being excluded from future procurement procedures.
