The High Court in Accra has directed the Electoral Commission (EC) to continue collating and subsequently announcing the results of the recently concluded parliamentary election in the Eastern region’s Nsawam Adoagyiri Constituency.

On Friday, December 20, the Inspector General of Police (IGP) was also directed by the court, which was presided over by Justice Rev. Joseph Adu-Owusu Agyeman, to ensure that the EC at the collation center had sufficient security.

Six parliamentary candidates from the New Patriotic Party (NPP) for the 2024 elections sought a judicial review in the form of a Mandamus, requesting that the High Court order the Electoral Commission (EC) to compile and announce the results of the 2024 elections in their respective constituencies and order the IGP to provide sufficient security at the polling places so that the EC can fulfill its constitutional obligations without any more interference.

Tema Central, Nsawam-Adoagyiri, Okaikwei Central, Techiman South, Ablekuma North, and Ahafo Ano North were all represented by these candidates on behalf of the NPP.

According to the EC’s legal team, which was headed by Justine Amenuvor, the Commission was served with the application but decided not to challenge it.

By filing a motion for joinder, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) attempted to become a party to the case.

The Court, however, denied the plea, concluding that the NDC lacked adequate justification to be involved in the case.

The EC has named nine contested constituencies, including Nsawam-Adoagyir.

The Commission claims that hundreds of party supporters stormed the constituency’s collation center, forcefully blocking the process and bringing it to a standstill.

According to the report, 100 out of 203 polling stations’ results were compiled prior to the chaos, however two ballot boxes and one BVD were damaged in the process. However, because the process could not be finished, results could not be announced.
