The West African Examinations Council’s (WAEC) request for a stay of execution on a previous verdict that mandated the release of the withheld results from the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) was denied by an Accra High Court.

In its December 30, 2024, release, WAEC cited alleged examination malpractices and anomalies as the reason for withholding the results of about 10,000 WASSCE applicants across a number of courses.

The High Court did, however, find in favor of four students who had petitioned on behalf of all impacted applicants on January 30, 2025.

The court ruled that the council’s explanation for keeping the results secret was vague and contradictory, and ordered WAEC to make them public without any negative footnotes.

Furthermore, the court determined that preserving the findings forever might impede the students’ advancement in both their academic and professional lives.

WAEC requested a stay of execution while an appeal was underway in spite of this verdict.

Justice Ali Baba Abature, the presiding judge, denied the application during a hearing on February 20, 2025, stating that WAEC had not sufficiently justified its actions.

Additionally, WAEC was fined GHS 5,000 by the court.
