Due to their alleged involvement in violent disturbances on Election Day in Damongo, Savannah Region, 14 people have been ordered into jail custody by a Kumasi High Court.
Two juveniles were released, while 14 of the 16 suspects who were arraigned were placed under remand.
One person was killed and the Electoral Commission’s office sustained major damage when the violence broke out, allegedly as a result of delays in announcing the election results.
Enraged by the circumstances, protesters allegedly broke into the Damongo Municipal Collation Center and burned down the EC office, causing a great deal of damage.
The case was moved from the Savannah Region to the Kumasi High Court due to the town’s instability.
Nine counts are against the accused, including assault, unauthorized damage, inflicting harm, and impeding electoral authorities from carrying out their responsibilities.
In order to do more investigation, the State Attorney asked that the plea be postponed.
However, the defense team made the case for their clients’ release, pointing out that two of the defendants are juveniles.
Alhaji Imoro Seidu, the legal guardian, was granted the kids’ release by the court, provided he deposited his Ghana Card with the Court Registrar.
Pleas are anticipated to be accepted at the court’s next session, which is set for December 19, 2024.
While investigations are ongoing, the remaining defendants have been placed under remand in prison custody.
