After their bail request was refused on Tuesday, September 24, a court in Accra Circuit Court, thirty-nine individuals from various backgrounds who took part in the three-day Democracy Hub demonstrations were placed under arrest.
Five counts of charges were proffered against them after their arrests on Saturday, September 21. The charges are; Conspiracy to commit crime – unlawful assembly, unlawful assembly, destruction of property, offensive conduct, assault on public officer
After showing up in court today, ten of the demonstrators who had been detained during the #OccupyJulorbiHouse the demonstration were the first to be placed under detention.
The entire group—roughly 39 people—was driven about in several busses with close protection.
The protestors faced charges in court of conspiring to commit an unlawful assembly plot.
the first twelve entered not guilty pleas.
Ten of the defendants whose cases were recently heard have been remanded into the custody of the police.
The lawsuit will now proceed on October 8, 2024.
The remaining nine defendants entered not guilty pleas to counts of conspiracy to commit illegal assembly, unlawful damage, and offensive behavior resulting from a breach of peace.
They have also been remanded to return on October 8.
A recent graduate who is doing his National Service is among them.
The third group of 11 demonstrators was next; the other 19 who had been remanded are now being returned to their police cells.
The hearing for this group of eleven has also been postponed until October 8 and they have been remanded into prison custody.
The case of a different group of nine people has been postponed until October 11 and they have been remanded into police custody.
A bench warrant has been issued for one individual who neglected to appear in court in the interim.
Oliver Baker-Vormawor, the convenor of the #FixTheCountry organization, is scheduled to appear in court on Wednesday.
