The Member of Parliament (MP) for North Tongu, Samuel Okudjato Ablakwa has received flak for allegedly misleading some of his constituents at Mepe and Aveyime in the constituency currently rendered homeless as a result of Akosombo and Volta River Dam spillage.

The outspoken lawmaker in an interview told the press, that the people, including himself, were unaware before the spillage which now caused havoc for people in the nearby communities.

While calling Management of the Volta River Authority (VRA) and the Kpong Dam to compensate the affected residents, Hon. Okudjato Ablakwa also took a swipe at accusing the government of negligence, among others.

Reacting to the MP’s comments on Kumasi-based Sompa TV, a Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) of Atwima Nwanbiagya in the Ashanti Region, Michael Amoako Awuku expressed disgust about the lawmaker’s comment and posture.

“I’m surprised at Ablakwa’s comment and posture, he’s not aware of before the spillage.  At least, if the people had not told of the opening of the dam, we could have recorded at least one death by now, but the situation is different today as we speak.  Except for property loss, nobody is dead.

“So, Ablakwa’s statement is not true”, Hon. Michael Amoah Awuku challenged the North Tongu MP to provide evidence to back his allegations that the government was complacent in evacuating and supporting the victims.

The Ghana Navy has disclosed that over 8,000 people have been rescued from flood-stricken areas as a result of the destructive spillage from the Akosombo Dam.

Commodore EA Kwafo from the Naval Training Command during an update on the floods at Mepe in the Volta Region said the combined rescue team deployed to the affected districts is currently monitoring critical infrastructure and responding to distress calls to neutralize the effect of the damage caused by the spillage.

“We are monitoring critical infrastructure as well as responding to distress calls from the district assemblies, VRA, and NADMO and we have been rescuing people on the water”.
