The first day of the funeral rites of the late Asantehemaa was solemnly observed today in the Manhyia Palace, drawing large crowds of mourners from all walks of life.

The ceremonies, deeply rooted in Ashanti tradition, marked the beginning of a weeklong farewell to the revered Queen Mother.

From the early hours of the morning, the Manhyia Palace and its surroundings were filled with chiefs, queen mothers, and subjects of the Golden Stool, all dressed in mourning attire.

The atmosphere was heavily symbolic, reflecting the respect and reverence accorded to the Asantehemaa in her lifetime.

Traditional drumming, gun salutes, and cultural displays formed part of the day’s proceedings.

Courtiers and palace officials ensured that customs were strictly followed, as mourners paid homage to the departed queen mother who played a vital role in preserving the heritage of the Ashanti Kingdom.

Dignitaries from across the country, including political leaders, traditional rulers, and foreign envoys, were present to show their solidarity with Asanteman.

Their presence highlighted the influence of the late Asantehemaa beyond the borders of the Ashanti Kingdom.

The late Asantehemaa, who served from 2017 until her passing earlier this year at the age of 98, is remembered as a pillar of wisdom and continuity in the Asante Kingdom.

The burial rites, which began on September 14, will culminate in a grand procession on September 18.

Thousands of mourners, alongside Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, are expected to attend, underscoring the cultural and historical significance of the moment.

As part of the rites, the queen mother’s body will be moved from the Dwaberem at Manhyia Palace to the Bantama Royal Mausoleum for rituals, before proceeding to the Breman Royal Mausoleum for final burial—ceremonial movements rooted in centuries-old Asante custom.

The event has attracted national attention, with President John Dramani Mahama confirming his attendance.

Churches, political parties, educational institutions, NGOs, and corporate bodies are also expected to join in paying their respects, reflecting the queen mother’s influence beyond traditional circles.
