Former Assin Central Constituency Member of Parliament(MP), Kennedy Agyapong, has filed an application in a U.S. court demanding a reduction in the $18m in damages levied against him in a civil action brought by investigative journalist Anas Aremeyaw Anas.

In a cross-motion for summary judgment, Agyapong’s legal team argued that the jury’s verdict need to be reconsidered and the damages modified.

The application, submitted to the New Jersey Superior Court, aims to have the verdict reconsidered and maybe lowered.

The case is the result of Agyapong and Anas’s protracted legal dispute. After the politician made a number of public claims and charges against the journalist, the journalist filed a defamation lawsuit against Agyapong. Following court proceedings, Anas was granted $18 million in damages by the court.

Agyapong’s attorneys referenced previous rulings in the application, stressing that although jury verdicts ought to be upheld, courts have the authority to alter damages as needed.

They demanded a fair review of the ruling, arguing that the amount granted was disproportionate.
