Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia cannot absolve himself of the “mess” of the Akufo-Addo-led government, according to former president John Dramani Mahama.

As the current presidential candidate of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) in 2024, he claims that Dr. Bawumia cannot claim he is not involved in the government’s “failures” because he participated in every decision made by President Akufo-Addo.

He believed that since Vice President Bawumia participated in every cabinet decision made by the government, he should be held equally accountable for both its positive and negative aspects.

As part of his town hall meetings in Tamale, Northern Region, Mr. Mahama, the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) flagbearer, addressed NDC faithful.

In a speech to the public on Wednesday, February 6, 2024, Dr. Bawumia laid out his campaign promises as a potential presidential candidate.

In order to improve Ghana’s economic situation, he asked attendees of the lecture, which was held in the University of Professional Studies, Accra (UPSA) auditorium, to grant him the opportunity to lead the nation.

Dr. Bawumia’s assertion that he was not in charge of the government’s important decisions, according to former president Mahama, is unfounded because he was heavily involved in the Akufo-Addo-led administration.

“Now all those who contributed to the mess are trying to run away from it as if they are not part of it…. people have begun saying they were not in charge….” he stated.

He added “None of them can escape responsibility because they’ve all been part of this. They all took those decisions together. Anytime they were going to borrow from the Eurobond market, they approved it in cabinet; they sat in cabinet and approved it,” former President Mahama stated.

He claimed that Dr. Bawumia shared in all of the loans obtained by the government led by Akufo-Addo, stating, “You went and borrowed 13.5 billion dollars and you did nothing with it for six years.” You therefore cannot come to us today and claim that you were not involved. They’re all a part of the mess we’ve made of it.”

According to him, “Ghanaians are going to send them packing for the hardships they’ve inflicted on us,” given the mess the Akufo-Addo-led government has created.
