Kofi Bentil, Senior Vice President of IMANI-Africa, says he supported Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia because he believes the former President John Mahama is not the best candidate to lead the nation.
Mr. Bentil contended that any action taken against Dr. Bawumia would also be a failure for Mr. Mahama, given the histories of both presidential contenders, whether they were corrupt or demonstrated transformative leadership.
Speaking on Saturday, February 10, on Newsfile, Mr. Bentil noted that Ghanaians were given the option to choose between Mr. Mahama and Dr. Bawumia for president.
Mr. Bentil emphasized that he was one of the people who spoke out at protests, went to the streets, and successfully rallied support for the New Patriotic Party (NPP) to win elections. He also emphasized that he was angry about the way the NPP was running the nation.
“I have been more critical of this government, myself and brothers in IMANI, no one in this country has been more critical whether on Egyapa or E-levy than us. I’m angry,” he stressed.
Even so, the Senior Vice President of IMANI-Africa expressed his frustration with the NPP’s poor leadership, saying he thought about his options and came to the conclusion that, taking all the factors into account, Dr. Bawumia was the better option.
“Mahama has been a president, he has been a vice president and the track record is there whether it’s corruption, whether it’s transformational leadership whatever it is and when I looked at all of that, I came to the conclusion that we are better off picking Vice President Bawumia and giving him a chance, at the least, let’s give him a fair hearing, let us hear the man and listen to what he has for this country.
“All of that together forced me to make that endorsement not to his person but in the calculation that it is better for this country even if we are going to make a mistake going forward,” he stated.
