The Electoral Commission (EC) has determined that a significant contributing cause to the low turnouts that have been characteristic of the Elections in previous years is the non-partisan nature of the District Level Elections (DLEs).

However, Samuel Guggisberg Asrifi-Young, the EC’s Bono Regional Director, said that the directorate had sophisticated PR thanks to EC employees in the area installing public address systems in shopping centers, truck stops, and other public areas.

This is done in an effort to increase public awareness of and appreciation for local government and, as a result, pique interest in and enthusiasm for taking part in the next December 19 DLEs.

Additionally, Asirifi stated to the Ghana News Agency (GNA) in an interview conducted in Sunyani that the directorate had made use of the many information centers that were dispersed throughout the area to reach out to people and explain the philosophy underlying local government structures and procedures as well as the necessity of eligible voters participating in the elections.

The District Level Elections this year will be held on December 19th by the Electoral Commission in compliance with the District Level Elections Regulations, 2015 (C.I. 89).

This comes after the Assembly and Unit Committee Members’ terms expire on December 17, 2023.

Asirifi-Young urged on the electorate to participate in the election process so that they would be able to make educated selections when they cast their ballots. She said that the EC would host a campaign platform for the candidates to convey their goals and dreams.
