Today, Wednesday, May 29, 2024, marks the formal conclusion of the limited voter registration exercise for 2024 by the Electoral Commission (EC).
In order to compensate for the difficulties encountered during the first two days of the exercise, which started on Tuesday, May 7, the 21-day period was extended by two days.
Before the 2024 election, the Commission aimed to enroll 623,000 new voters in the national album.
Political party agents have voiced satisfaction with the process and stated that they had met their targets, despite the early technological issues that plagued the exercise on the first two days and on the last day.
In a related vein, the Ashanti region’s exercise came to a seamless conclusion, although not before raising questions regarding the registration of minors, non-residents, and non-citizens.
But in the event of an extension, those who received their voter cards on the final day of the registration exercise would not have been able to join the more than 17 million Ghanaians who would cast ballots on December 7.
As the 2024 election approaches, Jean Mensa, the Chairperson of the Electoral Commission, has emphasized the significance of creating a reliable voter registration.
Elections cannot be transparent, she claimed, if there is no reliable voter registration.
Ahead of the 2024 limited voter registration exercise, Jean Mensah stated at a news conference in Accra on Monday that the EC is prepared to hold a transparent and credible election.
