The Electoral Commission (EC) has defended its choice to disqualify a number of presidential candidates from running in the elections scheduled for December 7, saying it is ready to handle any legal challenges.

On September 20, the EC disqualified eleven presidential candidates for not meeting the standards; among them was Bernard Anbataayela Mornah, the flagbearer of the People’s National Convention (PNC).

In response, the Progressive People’s Party’s Bernard Mornah and Kofi Siaw Asamoah have filed lawsuits in an attempt to reverse the EC’s ruling and force the Commission to put them back on the ballot.

But EC Chairperson Madam Jean Mensa stressed that the Commission carefully reviewed every nomination form before reaching a judgment at an Inter-Party Advisory Committee (IPAC) meeting on Tuesday, October 1, at the Alisa Hotel in Accra.

“You come again to nominations as I said. It was an open process. There was fairness. Committees were set up. And there are reports that have been provided based on the committee’s work. The process is transparent.

“A few have taken us to court. And we will prove to the citizenry and the people of Ghana that the process is transparent and fair. The EC has nothing to hide and it has no intention to stop anybody’s presidential ambitions.”
