Deputy Director in charge of Operations at the Presidency Mustapha Gbande has demanded the arrest of three people he says are accountable for the loss of over 1,300 containers at Tema Port that belonged to the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG).
Mustapha Gbande, who spoke on Eyewitness News on Citi FM on Monday, March 31, called for the immediate arrest of former ECG CEO Samuel Dubik Mahama, former ECG Board Chairman Alexander Afenyo-Markin, and former Energy Minister Matthew Opoku Prempeh.
Critical electrical equipment and materials meant for national power distribution were lost in the scandal, which has rocked the nation.
Reports state that the lost containers were sent to Ghana in order to assist with ECG activities, but they mysteriously disappeared.
A report that exposed procurement irregularities and dubious activities within ECG was the first to bring attention to the problem.
Additionally, it was claimed that some ECG executives and government representatives knew the containers were being handled improperly but did nothing about it.
In his unreserved call for justice, Mustapha Gbande declared that the three people ought to be held responsible for their participation in the incident.
“The Board Chairman, Afenyo-Markin now wants to run away from responsibility and it is in the interest of the country for him to be arrested immediately.
“I am calling for the immediate arrest of Afenyo-Markin, Samuel Dubik Maham and Matthew Opoku Prempeh because we cannot continue to have these instances of corruption, and it is time for us to take action.”
