With effect from January 29, 2024, Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger have formally withdrawn from the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS).

The three Sahelian countries formally left the regional organization after months of hostilities.

In a news release issued on Wednesday, ECOWAS reaffirmed its dedication to regional unity and promised that the group will continue to have open lines of communication even after the exit.

All pertinent institutions both inside and outside of member nations have been instructed by the ECOWAS Authority to put policies in place that will minimize disruptions for businesses and individuals throughout the transition period.

ECOWAS emphasized that these agreements will stand until the ECOWAS Heads of State and Government make a final decision about future interactions with the three countries.

“However, in the spirit of regional solidarity and in the interest of the people, as well as the decision of the ECOWAS Authority to keep ECOWAS’ doors open, all relevant authorities within and outside ECOWAS”

“These arrangements will be in place until the full determination of the modalities of our future engagement with the three countries by the ECOWAS Authority of Heads of State and Government. The Commission has set up a structure to facilitate discussions on these modalities with each of the three countries. This message is necessary to avoid confusion and disruption in the lives and businesses of our people during this transition period.”
