Haruna Iddrisu, the Minister of Education, has instructed the University of Ghana (UG) to reduce the residential facility user fees (RFUF) for traditional halls by GHS 500.

The current fee is GHS3,000; thus, in accordance with the directive, the new fee will be GHS2,500.

The ministry claims that the decision applies to all new and existing students at Ghana’s first institution.

“I have asked the Vice Chancellor to reduce the residential facility fees by 25 percent and I have subsequently asked her to engage you (SRC) in the future on any fee announcement,” the Students Representative Council (SRC), presided over by Maradona Adjei Yeboah “Guru”, was notified by Mr. Iddrisu.

The minister was reassured of compliance by Vice Chancellor Prof. Nana Aba Amfoh during a meeting with the UG management on Thursday, February 6, 2025.

“We have listened to you our minister and also our students, and we can afford to reduce it to 25 percent across the board and going forward there will be adequate student engagement” she stated.

Guru thanked the students and demanded that their tuition be reimbursed.

“We are thankful for the reduction at least it will reduce some sort of burden from our parents, there should be a refund for those who have already paid,” he said.

In January 2025, the GHS3,000 RFUF was publicly revealed. According to the UG administration, 80% of their students have already paid the usage fees for the residential facilities.
