The Kumasi Kejetia Market was disconnected from the National Grid by the Electricity Company of Ghana due to a debt of six million Ghana cedis.
The disruption of the facility’s power supply for a week has had a significant impact on trading activities in the commercial hub. The most affected businesses are tailors, cold storage operators, and vendors of perishable goods.
Following the blackout, a generator was installed at the site to provide backup power. However, the traders found this unsustainable, as they were afraid of being charged for the fuel. Consequently, they are now resorted to using flashlights for their nighttime activities.
Speaking to Ghanatodayonline.com Jacob Agyenim Boateng, vice chairman for Dinpa Tailors Association, Mr Frank Boateng said the situation is affecting their work negatively
He noted that, hundreds of tailors are not working now due to the lack of power in the market
They have therefore called managers of the facility to as a matter of urgency work towards restoring power to the market
