Eric Opoku, the Minister-designate for Food and Agriculture, claims that he will oversee the establishment of farms in all of the nation’s secondary schools.

He claims that by utilizing Ghana’s essential land resources, this project will support the growth of the nation’s agriculture industry.

During his appearance before Parliament’s vetting committee today, he responded to inquiries on how to improve the country’s agricultural industry by saying, “We are also going to encourage institutional farming.”

He clarified that “every secondary school in this country will be required to own a farm” as part of the institutional farming initiative.

“I would work with the Ministry of Education to recruit laborers for secondary schools to help them establish and maintain their farms,” he added.

The Bono Region’s MP for Asunafo South Constituency went on to say that the project would enhance the caliber of meals provided to pupils in addition to addressing the problem of insufficient food for secondary schools.

“If nothing else, we can reduce the cost of school feeding and also enhance both the quality and quantity of the food provided to our students,” Mr Opoku stated.

Ghana used to have a lot of school farms, but in the late 2000s, enthusiasm in the idea waned among stakeholders and succeeding administrations.
