A huge crowd greeted Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the NPP’s vice president and flagbearer, as he visited the Ejura-Sekyedumase Constituency on Wednesday.
Notwithstanding the fact that the NDC has controlled the Ashanti Region’s Ejura-Sekyedumase Constituency, the NPP has only won the parliamentary seat there twice throughout the 4th Republic, with the NDC taking the remaining elections.
But the NDC is clearly facing an uphill battle to hold onto the seat, as evidenced by the enormous crowd that received Dr. Bawumia. The NPP has stated its intention to win both the presidential and parliamentary ballots.
The sizable Zongo and Muslim communities in Ejura have historically supported the NDC, but this time, the Zongo community showed up in numbers to greet Dr. Bawumia in the town and to attend his community rally.
Prior to the community connect, Dr. Bawumia was greeted with great enthusiasm when his bus went into town. On his route to the location, he met members of the constituency, including the clergy, traditional leaders, imams, and tribe chiefs from the Zongo.
The large Zongo delegation praised Dr. Bawumia for his tremendous support of the Zongo and Ejurama after the clergy gave a stirring prayer for the vice president at the community link.
The biggest boost for Dr. Bawumi and the NPP Parliamentary Candidate was when the Ejura Traditional Council, led by Barima Osei Hwediem II, declared their strong support for Bawumia for the numerous development projects that have come to the town through his interventions.
With Ejuramam assuring Dr. Bawumia and the Parliamentary Candidate of their unflinching support, they headed to the community connect in high spirits, especially after Bawumia has a engaging meet and greet on the street.
At the community connect, they were met with a mammoth crowd of enthusiastic young men and women, including many, said to be converts from the NDC.
Some speakers had to talk to the large, diverse gathering in a variety of languages, such as Fulani, Mamprusi, Dagbani, and Dagarti.
It was very clear from all signs that Dr. Bawumia, the NPP’s first Muslim and Northern presidential candidate, had won over a sizable portion of the Zongo population in Ejura and the surrounding area.
Many of the supporters, dressed in NPP clothing, could be heard singing and chanting as Dr. Bawumia’s bus left Ejura for the next stop following his address. The NDC had been terrified upon witnessing the sizable crowd.
