The government announced that Nana Konadu Agyeman-Rawlings, the creator of the 31st December Women’s Movement and a former First Lady, has passed away.
Mrs. Rawlings passed on Thursday morning, October 23, 2025, following a brief illness, according to a statement released by the Presidency and signed by Felix Kwakye Ofosu, Minister for Government Communications.
“The Government announces with deep regret and profound sorrow, the untimely passing of former First Lady and Founder of the 31st December Women’s Movement, Her Excellency Mrs. Nana Konadu Agyeman-Rawlings. Mrs. Rawlings passed this morning after a short illness,” the statement read.
“The Government extends its deepest condolences to her immediate family,” the statement read, expressing the government’s sympathy for the grieving family.
Renowned for her decades of activity through the 31st December Women’s Movement, Nana Konadu Agyeman-Rawlings was a trailblazing supporter of social justice and women’s liberation. She became a political leader in her own right after serving as Ghana’s First Lady from 1981 to 2001.
The family is anticipated to make an announcement soon with more information about the funeral plans.
