Ignatius Baffour Awuah, a former minister of employment and Labour Relations, and two other people have been taken into custody by the Ghana Police Service in relation to a violent altercation during a football game that claimed one life.

The tragedy happened at Nsoatre in the Bono Region on February 2, 2025, during a game between Nsoatreman FC and Kumasi Asante Kotoko FC.

Kyeremeh Joseph and Agyemang Duah Owusu, the other suspects, are also being held by the police.

The police verified that all three suspects are cooperating with investigations in a statement released on February 3.

“A search conducted in the room of suspect Agyemang Duah Owusu led to the retrieval of two dresses with suspected bloodstains and an MP 23 pistol with 15 rounds of ammunition.”

Kumasi Asante Kotoko FC’s leadership and the deceased’s family have received condolences from Inspector-General of Police Dr. George Akuffo Dampare. He promised them a thorough investigation.

To support the Bono Regional Police Command in the continuing investigation, a special team from the Criminal Investigation Department Headquarters has been sent in.

The match, which saw Kotoko lose 1-0, was tainted by furious altercations on and off the field.

When players collided, tensions increased and the referee sent out four red cards. After the final whistle, the situation became even more out of control, and rival supporters started fighting.
