On Thursday, August 14, 2025, in the Asukawkaw Market in the Krachi East Municipality of the Oti Region, a fuel truck crashed onto vendors and customers, killing four people.
The tanker’s driver lost control of the vehicle and crashed into the crowded market, causing a chaotic scene, according to a report from Citinewsroom.com.
Three mothers and a one-year-old girl are among the dead victims; fourteen more are said to have been injured in varying degrees.
Speaking about the disaster, the Assembly Member of Asukawkaw revealed that the deceased had been taken to the morgue and the injured had been taken to a hospital.
The assembly member called the incident a “dark day” for the residents of Asukawkaw and urged that speed ramps be installed on the road to stop future occurrences of the same kind.
To help with the investigation, the tanker’s driver has subsequently been taken into custody by Katanga District police.
