The National Democratic Congress (NDC) flagbearer, John Dramani Mahama, has promised Ghanaians that his administration will maintain the Free Senior High School (Free SHS) program and provide the necessary funds to make it sustainable.

Speaking about the policy at a meeting with Christian leaders in Kumasi on Monday, November 11, Mahama denied rumors that, if elected, he would abolish Free SHS, describing them as a “political gimmick” intended to deceive the public.

“Free SHS has come to stay,” Mahama affirmed, highlighting that while the program has increased access to education, securing sustainable funding is essential to guarantee its future.

“We must ensure it’s well-funded to improve its quality and keep it going.”

Though with an emphasis on obtaining steady funding to address the program’s issues, Mahama’s comments demonstrate the NDC’s dedication to the Free SHS policy.

Although they have different opinions about how to improve the policy’s quality and execution, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the New Democratic Party (NDC) have both renewed their support for it.

Along with ensuring Free SHS funding, Mahama stressed the value of high-quality education, pointing out that a program with sufficient funding will improve Ghanaian students’ academic performance.

He gave Ghanaians his word that Free SHS would not only endure under his direction, but would also be enhanced to better serve the needs of generations to come.
