The request that the government repeal Legislative Instrument (L.I.) 2462, which regulates mining operations in forest reserves, has been reaffirmed by Bernard Owusu, the chairman of the Trades Union Congress (TUC).
Bernard Owusu made the case that changing the legislation alone would not be enough in an appearance on Channel One Newsroom on Thursday, May 1.
“We are still asking government to go to Parliament to revoke that L.I. We’ve heard that government is trying to amend it, but that is not what we demanded for, and we are asking that the L.I. should be revoked,” he urged immediate and decisive action.
Environmental activists and the general public have strongly criticized L.I. 2462, which permits mining operations in forest reserves, for contributing to the negative consequences of illicit mining, or galamsey.
According to reports, when Parliament returns from recess, the contentious Legislative Instrument (LI) 2462 will be abolished.
