The National Anti-Illegal Mining Operations Secretariat (NAIMOS) executed multiple raids on Monday, December 29 In a focused effort to combat illegal mining.
The operation, starting at approximately 1:40 PM, targeted illegal mining sites in the Akyem Oda region of the Birim Central Municipality.
The operation led to the arrest of five Chinese nationals who were reportedly involved in illegal mining and washing activities discharging directly into the Birim River.
During the operations, the taskforce disabled two excavators discovered working at the site. Authorities also confiscated a Toyota Hilux truck and a Toyota Land Cruiser thought to be utilized by the arrested individuals.
To eliminate the illegal mining setup, the team demolished various temporary structures constructed by the riverbank. This teardown involved water pumping machinery and additional mining tools discovered at the location.
This initiative forms part of NAIMOS’s continuous festive season effort, designed to safeguard Ghana’s key water bodies from additional pollution and environmental harm resulting from illegal mining operations.
