The Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) reports that at least three people were killed in a devastating fire explosion near Stadium Junction at Bogobiri in the Ashanti Region town of Obuasi on Friday, December 13.
Nine others were injured and taken to the hospital for medical treatment after the fire started at 11:10 a.m. Firefighters from AngloGold Ashanti and Fomena quickly arrived at the scene by 11:15 a.m.
Following hours of intense firefighting, the fire was brought under control by 1:08 p.m. and was completely extinguished at 2:23 p.m.
Twelve salon vehicles, one minibus, four metal containers, and two concrete buildings were destroyed in the explosion, which also caused significant damage. However, three adjoining storey buildings and seven metal containers, together with their contents, were saved thanks to the prompt action of the firefighting services.
As authorities attempt to ascertain the details behind the terrible tragedy, the GNFS reports that an inquiry into the cause of the fire is presently ongoing. The emergency workers’ work saved lives and limited damage by halting additional destruction.
According to the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS), the incident was caused by welding activity at a garage.
Firefighters have since been deployed to the scene and are currently managing the situation.
In a statement, GNFS advised residents and motorists to avoid the affected area and use alternative routes for their safety.
