President John Dramani Mahama has expressed dismay at the economic mismanagement he has unearthed.

He claimed that the nation’s economy was “criminally mishandled” by the NPP administration.

Speaking at the National Tripartite Committee meeting at the Ministry of Labour, Jobs, and Employment, when the announcement of a 10% basic pay increase for public sector employees, effective March 2025, was made, President Mahama made this statement.

“We all knew the economy was in crisis, but some of the things I am uncovering myself have been a criminal mishandling of our economy. Ghana is now a crime scene,” he stated.

“How can a government be so reckless? I cannot understand,” he added.

An agreement to raise the base salary for public sector employees was agreed by the government and organized labor.

Announced on Thursday, February 20, 2025, the increase will take effect between January and December of that year.

The Labour Minister, Dr. Rashid Pelpuo, claims that the daily minimum salary has increased to GH₵ 19.97, following organized labor’s earlier demand for a raise in base pay.

A 10% increase in the daily minimum wage has also been approved by the National Tripartite Committee.

The increase will take effect on January 1, 2025, and last until December 2025, as per the agreement signed on February 20, 2025, between Organized Labor and the government, represented by the Ministry of Finance (MoF), the Ministry of Labor, Jobs and Employment (MLJE), and the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission (FWSC).

The Public Services Joint Standing Negotiating Committee (PSJSNC) and important parties, including as labor unions and government agencies, negotiated this agreement.

This salary increase is the second in less than a year; the last one was in 2024, when a 23% increase was authorized by the government to combat the growing expense of living.
