Francis-Xavier Sosu, the Madina member of parliament, has reintroduced the Anti-Witchcraft Accusation Bill in the wake of International Women’s Day with the goal of making witchcraft illegal and safeguarding older women who are at risk.
Despite the fact that Parliament passed the bill in July 2023, former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo never signed it into law, citing constitutional issues.
The law failed with the dissolution of the 8th Parliament, despite strong support, including a call for its passage by the Commission on Human Rights and Administrative Justice (CHRAJ).
In an effort to get the bill passed by the 9th Parliament, Sosu has enlisted the support of nine other MPs.
They are: Hajia Laadi Ayii Ayamba (Pusiga), Kwame Anyimadu-Antwi (Asante-Akim Central), Helen Adjoa Ntoso (Krachi West), Dzifa Gomashie (Ketu South), Zuwera Ibrahimah (Salaga South), Comfort Doyoe (Ada), Dr. Godfred Seidu Jasaw (Wa East), Rita Naa Odoley Sowah (La-Dadekotopon).
In order to safeguard the dignity and protection of older women under Ghana’s constitution and international human rights treaties, Sosu maintains that he will not stop working until the bill is passed.
