On November 19, 2024, President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo officially commissioned the $1.2 billion Bridge Power Plant in Tema, which represents a significant milestone in Ghana’s efforts to achieve both economic growth and energy security.
Developed in collaboration with Endeavour Energy and Early Power Ltd., the 515 megawatt combined-cycle power plant is currently among the biggest and most sophisticated power plants in the nation.
The plant’s commissioning represents the realization of a goal established when the project began construction in April 2017. The project demonstrates Ghana’s dedication to using state-of-the-art technologies and creative energy solutions in order to satisfy its expanding electrical needs.
“Today, we celebrate a transformative step forward in our journey toward energy independence. Reliable power is the backbone of development, and this facility is proof that Ghana is ready to overcome the challenges of the past and embrace a brighter future,” President Akufo-Addo said during the ceremony.
The President remembers the difficult times during the previous administration when businesses and lifestyles across were disturbed by “dumsor,” or frequent power outages. He gave Ghanaians the assurance that the Bridge Power Plant would supply steady electricity, alleviating the burden on the country’s grid and resolving the energy shortages that previously impeded economic development.
“This plant is more than a source of power; it is a beacon of hope and a testament to what we can achieve through strategic partnerships and a clear vision,” he remarked.
The Bridge Power Plant is designed to integrate seamlessly into Ghana’s energy mix, providing efficient and environmentally sustainable electricity. Its cutting-edge technology ensures lower carbon emissions, aligning with the government’s commitment to a greener future.
President Akufo-Addo highlighted the plant’s potential to drive industrial growth by supplying reliable power to factories, hospitals, schools, and households. The facility will also support rural electrification efforts, bringing electricity to remote areas and improving the quality of life for underserved communities.
“The power generated here will fuel an industrial revolution, creating jobs, attracting foreign investment, and laying the foundation for sustained economic growth,” he added.
For their steadfast commitment to the project, Endeavour Energy and its partners received praise from the president. Additionally, he recognized the efforts of Ghanaian engineers and laborers who were instrumental in making the facility a reality.
With an eye toward the future, President Akufo-Addo reiterated his administration’s will to tackle the energy sector’s financial issues and fortify ties with Independent Power Producers (IPPs). He urged everyone involved to cooperate in order to maintain the plant and help Ghana achieve its energy goals.
An important turning point in Ghana’s energy history has been reached with the commissioning of the Bridge Power Plant. It ushers in a new era of growth, sustainability, and resilience, opening the door to a time when energy shortages will no longer occur.
“This plant stands as a symbol of what Ghana can achieve when united by a shared purpose. It is with immense pride that I declare the Bridge Power Plant officially commissioned,” President Akufo-Addo added.
